Klissura remains in history with its participation in the April Uprising in 1876. We connect this participation with the tragic fate of this small mountain town, which was burned down completely.
For six days the people of Klissura fight for their lives and on the seventh – more than 400 of them are killed, all the houses, the two school buildings and the church are burned down as well.

The epic fights that took place at the highest points of the Shipka Pass – the St. Nikola peak (today Stoletov peak), the Shipka peak and the Orlovo gnezdo peak from 9 (21) to 11 (23) August 1877, were between the army of Suleyman Pasha and the Russian-Bulgarian army of General N. G. Stoletov. The Bulgarians fought heroically for the defense of the Shipka Pass.
