THE LEGEND
Krali Marko loved to sit on the sharp, conic, forested peak of Chuchul, which he used as a watch-tower. From this peak he often called his sister Mara and his voice echoed like a thunder. Once he expected his sister to visit him on the site of Marko’s trapezi (tables), she was late and he climbed on Chuchul peak and looked around for her. Gazing to the East, he saw Mara running along the hills of Kumanitsa mountain. Behind her ran Mussa – the son of the sultan Bayazid. Krali Marko shouted out towards him. His voice flew over mountains and gullies but Mussa did not stop. The raging Krali Marko grabbed his mace and threw it towards him with great strength. The mace flew over the Markovi Ventci (the huge tiara-like rocks) and fell on Kumanitsa with thunder and crash. With a new roar the mace dug a hole in the ridge. The mountain shook with the strong hit. A tremendous dust cloud rose to the sky. When everything calmed beneath the crest of the mountain a huge hole opened – Markova Dupka (Marko’s hole). there are three ends of this legend. According to the one Mussa got scared and ran away. According to the other – Marko killed Mussa with his mace, but his sister died together with him. In the third version Mussa kidnapped Mara despite of everything. |
