RESERVES
There are nine Reserves within the Central Balkan National Park: Boatin, Tsarichina, Kozya Stena, Steneto, Severen Djendem, Peeshti Skali, Sokolna, Djendema and Stara Reka.
They contain representative examples of ecosystems that comprise unique, remarkable and/or characteristic plant or animal species in their natural habitat. All are areas of prime conservation significance—listed as Category 1 according to the World Conservation Union (IUCN) classification.
The Management Plan for Central Balkan National Park has designated these areas as the Reserves Zone, where special regimes and norms apply.

It was established 50 years ago - in 1948 and it is settled at the foot of Baba peak, on the land of Cherni Vit village, and occupies territory of about 16 sq. km.

It is the smallest reserve included in the territory of National park “Central Balkan” situated in the picturesque Stara planina mountain. It was established with the aim of preserving the graceful edelweiss and the century-old beech and silver fir tree forests.

The Severen Djendem is the nature reserve with the highest altitude within the National Park “Central Balkan”. It covers the northern slopes of the Botev and Rusalka peaks.

The reserve was established in 1979 and embrace part of the Sokolna and Kui dere rivers. The purpose of the reserve is to protect the unique variety of rare plant and animal species.

"Steneto" was proclaimed a nature reserve on 5.04.1979. It has been expanded for several times and nowadays is one of the greatest reserves in the National park of Central Balkan.

The reserve was established in 1979. Its purpose is to protect the high – mountain wood-less places, the beech – woods and the typical for the Rositsa river fauna.

“Tsarichina” is the third largest reserve in the National park of Central Balkan. The reserve preserves a self kept ecosystem and is included in the UNESCO program “Man and biosphere”.

Given the number of threatened plant species that are protected within this nature reserve, it is one of the most important in Bulgaria.The animals sheltered here are also extremely valuable from the point of view of conservation.

It covers the catchment of the Byala Reka river between the Botev and Ravnets Peaks, the upper stream of Tundja river and the gorge of the Tuja river in Stara planina mountain. Оne of the largest and the most inaccessible nature reserves in Bulgaria and on the Balkan Peninsula.
